Baby Driver - Pure Style

Baby Driver is directed by Edgar Wright and its about a guy named Baby played by Ansel Elgort, a famous getaway driver known for pulling off tough heists. The movie also has Kevin Spacey who plays Doc, the guy who organizes all these heists, Jon Hamm and Jamie Foxx who play the roles of thieves taking part in these tough heists.

The whole movie revolves around Baby who's an expert driver known for getting out of tough cop chases and is in an agreement with Doc in order to pay off his debts. Baby just like any other kickass character has a tragic backstory, he has lost both his parents in a car accident and was particularly attached to his mother, am I getting a little Harry Potter here? During the accident, Baby developed tinnitus, a medical condition where there is constant ringing sensation in the ears. In order to mask the condition, he constantly listens to music tracks and album which turn out to be the best part of him. The movie has a ton of action sequences which fit perfectly with the sync of the tracks. A lot of effort has gone into picking the perfect tracks and then shooting the action sequences accordingly. Although Baby is in the gangster business his heart is still pure. In almost every situation he's forced to take part instead of being given a choice.

Kevin Spacey is the boss of all these heists and he had a lot more screentime than I expected. He organizes these heists, with each of his heist having different people but the one common thing among them being Baby. Other important characters include Jamie Foxx who plays a gangster called bats and Jon Hamm who plays Buddy. Jamie Foxx basicaly steals every scene he's in be it humour, action or threatening someone at gunpoint.

So Baby incidentally meets a waitress, Debora and the two of them find their spark because of their common interest in music. Baby, usually so quiet around people opens up to her and Debora genuinely likes Baby for who he is. The romance scenes were beautifully taken and Lily James does a neat job as well. The movie is about Baby struggling to find an escape route off his world and follow his heart. Like I mentioned before, Baby doesn't like to participate in these heists and is just doing them because he's in a really complicated situation. He tries his best to escape his world and elope with Debora but as long as Jamie Foxx and Jon Hamm are around, its not happening.

Having a pure heart in a profession like his leads to very tough situations for Baby in his journey to get together with Debora. The problems he faces are life threatening to both him and the people around him. Speaking of the people around him, Baby lives with his foster dad, a really funny mute, handicapped guy and their relationship is beautiful as well. Baby doesn't keep any secrets with him and his father completely understands his tricky situation.

Its been a while since I saw something as entertaining, fun, humorous and action packed as this. Seriously, this movie hits all the right notes when it comes to camera work, action scenes, heist missions, romance and insane car driving. We experience the movie through Baby's eyes and Ansel Elgort is just perfect. He's the living example of how smart, handsome and kickass someone can be even without having to talk too much or having a beard. Everytime we see him on screen, you just want to see more of him. Though he's known for his work in fault in our stars, this will be the turning point of his career. He has proven to everyone that he can pull of any role and he reminds me of DiCaprio's change of fortunes when he started acting in movies like 'catch me if you can', 'The Departed' and 'Blood diamond'. He was also originally just a heart throb and look where he is right now. In a nutshell, Ansel has a bright future ahead and I can't wait to see more of him. With the right directors, this kid will be going places. My guess is, he'll be into Marvel or DC pretty soon.

So overall, Baby Driver is an amazing action movie, and has something for everyone in the audience and those action movie lovers shouldn't miss this out in theatres. Jamie Foxx and Kevin Spacey both deserve an oscar nomination for best supporting actor and this movie is definitely going to get nominated for its soundtracks and sound editing and I wouldn't be surprised even if it wins. It felt like a breath of fresh air, something out of the ordinary, and all modern day films should take notes.

Verdict: 8.5/10

After watching this, I really want to get behind some wheels, get myself an old ipod and drive crazy so my suggestion would be to not drive to the theatre.
